Summary
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a biodegradable, bio-derived polyester, and pairing it with antibacterial zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles is attractive for medical and packaging materials. This work designs PHB-based nanofibrous hybrid materials containing nano-ZnO using two different fabrication routes: direct electrospinning of PHB/ZnO solutions, and electrospinning of PHB combined with electrospraying of ZnO nanoparticle dispersions. The authors characterise how the nanoparticles distribute within or on the fibres depending on the technique, and use differential scanning calorimetry to determine how ZnO influences the phase transitions of the as-spun PHB nanofibers. Antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus proved to depend strongly on the elaboration technique — giving a route to tune bactericidal behaviour by choosing how the ZnO is incorporated.
