Summary

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the tissues supporting the teeth, in which oxidative stress and bacterial infection within the periodontal pocket drive tissue destruction. This study explores electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibres as a local carrier for resveratrol, a natural polyphenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity but poor water solubility. Loading resveratrol into a fibrous PCL mat is intended to place the drug directly inside the periodontal pocket and release it there over time, avoiding the drawbacks of systemic delivery. The authors prepared and characterised the resveratrol-loaded nanofibres, examining their morphology, drug incorporation and in-vitro release behaviour. The work shows that electrospun PCL mats can serve as a practical, localised delivery platform for antioxidant compounds aimed at the treatment of periodontal disease.
