Preparation of Super-Hydrophilic Polyphenylsulfone Nanofiber Membranes for Water Treatment

Summary

Thin-film composite membranes for water purification need a support layer that is porous, mechanically sound and - crucially - readily wetted by water. This study prepares polyphenylsulfone nanofibre membranes and modifies them by heat and plasma treatment to make them super-hydrophilic, since a hydrophobic support impedes water flow no matter how good the active layer above it. The treated membranes then serve as supports in composite membranes for water treatment.
