Cerium Oxide and Chondroitin Sulfate Doped Polyurethane Scaffold to Bridge Tendons

Summary

When a chronically injured tendon is repaired surgically, the scar tissue that forms has different mechanical properties from healthy tendon, leaving the repair prone to re-injury or rupture. This study addresses that weak point with a scaffold of thermoplastic polyurethane doped with cerium oxide and chondroitin sulfate: the polyurethane supplies elasticity comparable to the native tissue, cerium oxide contributes antioxidant activity against the inflammation that accompanies tendon disorders, and chondroitin sulfate provides a biological cue familiar to the cells that must repopulate the bridge.
