Chitosan-Coated Poly(lactic acid) Nanofibres Loaded with Essential Oils for Wound Healing

Summary

Chronic skin wounds do not heal on their own, so the dressing has to do two jobs: keep bacteria in check and actively encourage the cells that rebuild tissue. This study develops nanofibres of poly(lactic acid) coated with chitosan and loaded with essential oils, combining a structural polymer with a naturally antibacterial coating and plant-derived actives. The intended result is a dressing that, once applied, exerts antibacterial activity while promoting adhesion and proliferation of fibroblasts - rather than simply covering the wound.
