Summary
Maltodextrins - the products of starch hydrolysis - can be electrospun from water and then cured by a mild thermal treatment, giving cross-linked polysaccharide mats without solvents or aggressive chemistry. This study exploits that combination to make renewable sorbents for removing contaminants from water, electrospinning aqueous solutions containing 50 wt% of a commercial maltodextrin together with a citric acid cross-linker. Both the bioderived starting material and the benign process make the resulting mats an unusually sustainable option in a field normally dominated by petrochemical sorbents.
