Multifunctional Electrospun Materials from Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Chitosan and Polylactide

Summary

Two different solutions were electrospun simultaneously from separate spinnerets to build a single fibrous material containing two distinct fibre populations: one of poly(vinyl alcohol), chitosan and rosmarinic acid, the other of poly(L-lactide) carrying lidocaine hydrochloride. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed both fibre types present at the surface and through the bulk, and ATR-FTIR confirmed the presence of all components together with interactions between them. The result is a dressing that combines antioxidant and antimicrobial action with a local anaesthetic - functions that would be difficult to reconcile in a single polymer solution, and which dual-spinneret electrospinning delivers in one step.

HVG-CONT-LCD high voltage control unit
The dual spinneret setup was driven by a high voltage power supply for scientific use, model HVG-CONT-LCD (Linari Engineering, Pisa, Italy), with a tip-to-collector distance of 15 cm, a grounded rotating collector and 28 h of deposition. Spinning two solutions at once is a task for which independent, programmable feeding is essential.
