Summary
Electrospinning has long relied on solvents that are effective but toxic, and the shift towards benign alternatives usually comes at a cost: they demand far longer and more careful optimisation. This study demonstrates how versatile benign solvents can nonetheless be, using acetic acid and formic acid to produce poly(ε-caprolactone) fibres across a range of conditions. Establishing a workable process window for these solvents matters well beyond this one polymer, since it removes a recurring obstacle to using electrospun materials in biomedical settings.
